Symptom 8: Shortness of Breath
Breath, the simple act of inhaling and exhaling, becomes notably arduous for some gastric volvulus patients. The association between a twisted stomach and difficulty breathing might seem tenuous, but there’s a direct link. When this essential act gets disrupted, even mildly, it’s more than just discomfort; it’s a red flag that requires attention.
The diaphragm, a primary muscle assisting in breathing, separates the chest from the abdomen. A distorted stomach can press against this muscle, impeding its full range of motion. Additionally, with a potential buildup of gas due to the volvulus, there’s further displacement, exacerbating the sensation of breathlessness.
Shortness of breath in gastric volvulus patients can range from subtle to severe. For some, it might be a mild tightness or a feeling of not getting a full breath. For others, particularly in acute cases, the sensation can be overwhelmingly suffocating, necessitating immediate medical aid.
Breathing issues don’t operate in isolation. Reduced oxygen intake affects the entire body. Symptoms can extend to fatigue, dizziness, and even cognitive impacts like confusion. Moreover, persistent breathing challenges can induce anxiety, creating a vicious cycle of worsening breathlessness. (8)
