Symptom 4: Asymmetry
A symmetrical appearance is a hallmark of a typical mole. However, if you were to draw a line through the middle of your mole and the two halves don’t match, it’s exhibiting asymmetry—a symptom that demands attention. While perfect symmetry is rare, significant discrepancies between the two halves can be a warning sign.
There’s a simple test to gauge a mole’s symmetry: the mirror test. Mentally visualize or use a mirror to reflect one half of the mole. If the reflected image drastically differs from the actual half, you’re looking at asymmetry. Using a grid paper to outline the mole can also provide insights into its symmetry or lack thereof.
External factors, like injuries or scratches, can sometimes lead to temporary asymmetry. However, this usually rectifies itself once the injury heals. If the asymmetry persists or if the mole seems to evolve into a more irregular shape, it’s time to be vigilant. (4)
