We’ve all felt it, that fiery sensation creeping up the chest, especially after a particularly spicy or heavy meal. Heartburn, or acid reflux, is a common complaint. But what happens when this burning sensation stops being an occasional visitor and becomes a regular intruder?

Heartburn results from stomach acid making its way back up into the esophagus, the tube that connects the throat and stomach. With stomach cancer, tumors or inflammation can affect the stomach’s ability to contain its acids and enzymes. When these digestive juices are refluxed into the esophagus, they can cause significant irritation, leading to that all-too-familiar burning sensation.

Persistent heartburn, especially in the absence of known triggers like certain foods or drinks, should raise an eyebrow. Moreover, if over-the-counter antacids or lifestyle modifications don’t provide relief, it’s a sign that something more profound might be at play. It could be an indication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or even a warning sign of stomach or esophageal cancer.

Importantly, chronic heartburn isn’t just about discomfort. Over time, the repeated exposure of the esophagus to stomach acids can lead to changes in its lining, a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus. This change, while not cancerous initially, increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer in the long run. (10)
