Symptom 9: Difficulty Breathing
Breathing, an automatic and often overlooked bodily function, becomes notably precious when it gets compromised. In the context of toxic megacolon, this life-giving process can become surprisingly challenging.
It might seem unrelated at first – what does the colon have to do with breathing? But here’s the connection: as the colon expands due to toxic megacolon, it pushes against neighboring organs, including the diaphragm. This pressure restricts the diaphragm’s movement, making each breath shallower and more laborious.
Breathing difficulties, especially if acute, can lead to a decreased oxygen supply to vital organs. The heart, attempting to compensate, might race, adding to the rapid heart rate symptom discussed earlier. The brain, deprived of its oxygen quota, might trigger dizziness or confusion.
The onset might be gradual. Perhaps it’s a mild shortness of breath after minimal exertion, like climbing a flight of stairs. Or maybe it’s a feeling of being unable to take a deep, satisfying breath, no matter how hard you try. (9)
