Diet 7: The Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet, often referred to as the “caveman diet,” focuses on consuming foods that our Paleolithic ancestors might have eaten, namely meats, fish, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. By eliminating processed foods, grains, dairy, and legumes, it aims to return to a more ‘natural’ way of eating.
For PBC patients, one immediate benefit is the reduced intake of processed foods, which are often laden with additives, preservatives, and other chemicals that can strain the liver. By focusing on whole foods, the liver receives a break from processing these artificial compounds.
Another benefit is the emphasis on lean meats and fish. These protein sources are not only nutritious but also relatively easy for the liver to process, ensuring it doesn’t get overburdened. Plus, the inclusion of omega-3 rich fish provides anti-inflammatory benefits.(7)
