Diet 8: The Alkaline Diet
The alkaline diet is built on the premise of modifying one’s food intake to influence the body’s pH levels. Proponents believe that by consuming more alkaline foods and fewer acidic ones, you can achieve a better health balance.
From a liver health perspective, especially for PBC patients, this diet’s emphasis on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes is advantageous. These foods are not only alkaline but also rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants, which support liver function and combat oxidative stress.
Moreover, by cutting down on processed foods, sugars, and excessive meats – all of which are deemed ‘acidic’ – the liver gets a respite from processing these taxing compounds. This can be especially beneficial for a liver already compromised by PBC.(8)
