Symptom 5: Sleep Disturbances
Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, often contributing to fatigue and exacerbating other symptoms. These disturbances can include insomnia, fragmented sleep, or excessive daytime sleepiness.
Insomnia, or difficulty falling or staying asleep, can be particularly distressing for CJD patients, as it can lead to increased nighttime restlessness and further disrupt their sleep patterns. This lack of restorative sleep can worsen cognitive and behavioral symptoms, making it even more challenging for patients to cope with their condition.
Fragmented sleep, or frequent awakenings during the night, can also be a problem for individuals with CJD. This disrupted sleep can contribute to feelings of fatigue and negatively impact overall well-being.
Excessive daytime sleepiness, or the inability to stay awake and alert during the day, can further complicate matters for CJD patients. This sleepiness can make it difficult for patients to engage in activities, maintain personal relationships, or perform essential daily tasks. (5)
