10. Rapid or Irregular Pulse: The Erratic Rhythm
One of the most common early signs of AFIB is a rapid or irregular pulse. It’s your heart’s own Morse code, telling you that something isn’t quite right. In AFIB, the atria (the heart’s upper chambers) contract irregularly and often rapidly. This can cause the pulse to feel rapid, irregular, or like it’s “jumping around” in your chest.
Feeling your own pulse can be an effective way to pick up on this symptom. You might notice that it’s faster than usual (normal resting heart rate is generally between 60 and 100 beats per minute) or that it’s not consistent. You might feel a beat followed by a pause, then a series of rapid beats, then another pause. This irregular rhythm, or arrhythmia, is a hallmark of AFIB.
However, it’s important to remember that while a rapid or irregular pulse is a common symptom of AFIB, it can also be a sign of other heart conditions. Moreover, some people with AFIB may not experience any noticeable changes in their pulse. That’s why it’s crucial to pay attention to your body and seek medical attention if you’re experiencing any symptoms out of the ordinary. (10)
