Fact 8: Increasing Incidence
It’s an undeniable reality that MCC, despite being rare, is seeing an upward trend in its incidence. While it still remains a small fraction of all skin cancer cases, its presence is becoming more pronounced. Various factors contribute to this rise, and understanding them is paramount.
Improved detection methods play a significant role. With advancements in dermatological technology and heightened awareness, more cases are being identified and reported. This might give the impression of a sudden surge, but it’s often a reflection of better diagnostic capabilities.
The global population’s aging demographic is another contributing factor. As previously mentioned, older individuals are at a higher risk of developing MCC. With an increasing number of people crossing the 50-year mark, the pool of susceptible individuals grows. (8)
