Fact 8: Prevention – A Holistic Approach
Despite the complex etiology and the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s and VaD, research has offered valuable insights into potential preventative measures. These preventative strategies often center around lifestyle modifications and management of cardiovascular risk factors, underscoring a holistic approach to health.
Eating a balanced, nutritious diet is one such strategy. The Mediterranean diet, high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil, has been associated with a lower risk of both Alzheimer’s and VaD. Regular physical activity is another significant aspect. Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of diabetes and hypertension, and is also associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline.
Management of cardiovascular risk factors is also crucial in preventing both Alzheimer’s and VaD. This includes maintaining a healthy blood pressure, managing cholesterol levels, preventing diabetes, or managing it effectively if already present. For individuals who smoke, smoking cessation is highly recommended given the substantial increase in risk associated with this habit. (8)
