5. Respiratory Issues: Breathing Becomes A Task
Breathing is such an intrinsic part of our existence that we rarely give it a second thought. However, for some NMOSD patients, each breath can become a conscious effort. Given that the spinal cord plays a pivotal role in regulating respiratory functions, the inflammation and subsequent damage caused by NMOSD can lead to respiratory complications.
Shortness of breath, even when at rest, is a common complaint. Some patients might experience bouts of breathlessness that come on suddenly and can be quite distressing. In severe cases, this can escalate to respiratory failure, a life-threatening situation where the body can’t get the oxygen it needs.
What compounds the challenge is the overlap of symptoms with other conditions. A patient might dismiss their breathlessness as a sign of aging or attribute it to a sedentary lifestyle. But in the context of NMOSD, it’s a critical symptom that requires immediate attention. Early intervention can help manage the symptom and prevent severe complications. (5)
