Fact 7: Charting the Treatment Course
Once the diagnosis is firm, the focus shifts to treatment. The landscape of interventions for open bite is vast and varied. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach but a tailored strategy based on the individual’s unique bite, age, and preferences. Braces, both traditional metal ones and the more modern clear aligners, are often the go-to solution.
Traditional braces, with their brackets and wires, apply pressure to the teeth, gradually shifting them to the desired position. Clear aligners, on the other hand, are a series of custom-made plastic trays that perform a similar role but with added discretion. They’re less noticeable, making them a favorite among adults and image-conscious teenagers.
Beyond braces and aligners, other interventions might be on the cards. Palatal expanders, for instance, can be used to widen the upper jaw, creating more space and facilitating better alignment. In severe cases, surgical interventions might be recommended, especially if skeletal discrepancies contribute to the open bite. (7)
