Another symptom that can easily be misinterpreted is heartburn. While many associate it with spicy food or acid reflux, in the context of gastroparesis, it has a different origin. The delayed gastric emptying causes the stomach acids to build up.

This accumulation of stomach acid can then flow back into the esophagus, leading to the characteristic burning sensation known as heartburn. Unlike typical acid reflux, this heartburn doesn’t necessarily follow the consumption of trigger foods.

The repercussions of constant acid reflux are severe. Continuous exposure of the esophagus to stomach acid can lead to conditions like GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or even esophageal ulcers. (7)
