Cause 8: Chronic Inflammation
The human body is a marvel, equipped with defenses against various threats. Inflammation is one such response, typically a sign that the body is fighting off harmful stimuli. But when this inflammation becomes chronic, it’s no longer a protective measure – it turns into a potential catalyst for diseases like mesothelioma.
Over time, chronic inflammation can cause DNA damage, potentially leading to cancer. The constant state of alertness and repair, driven by long-term inflammation, might increase cell turnover. This can result in genetic mutations that give birth to malignant cells. When this occurs in the mesothelial lining, mesothelioma becomes a looming threat.
What causes this persistent inflammation? Several factors can be at play. Prolonged exposure to asbestos, infections, or even auto-immune disorders can keep the body in a perpetual state of inflammatory response. The presence of asbestos fibers, in particular, can cause irritation and inflammation in the lung tissues, laying the foundation for mesothelioma. (8)
