Seizures, while not universal among PML patients, can be one of the most distressing symptoms. They manifest as sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain, leading to temporary disruptions in movement, behavior, and consciousness.
The genesis of these seizures is closely tied to the degenerative changes in brain tissue caused by PML. As the disease progresses, the likelihood of seizures can increase, often requiring aggressive management and treatment to prevent them.
These seizures are not merely a physical manifestation. The unpredictability of their occurrence can create a constant state of anxiety and fear, both for the patient and their loved ones. The potential for injury during a seizure episode further complicates matters. (9)
