Symptom 5: Persistent Itchiness
While we’ve all experienced itchiness at some point, often brushing it off as a minor annoyance, persistent itchiness associated with NSHL is different. This isn’t a fleeting sensation, but a continuous, sometimes overwhelming urge to scratch.
At a cellular level, the itchiness arises due to substances released by the cancer cells. These substances can irritate nerve endings, primarily in the skin, leading to the itch. The entire body may be affected, and the intensity can range from mild to severe.
Often, individuals might try to alleviate the sensation with over-the-counter creams or lotions. However, without addressing the root cause, the relief is temporary at best. The itch, in many cases, becomes a constant companion, impacting daily life and even sleep.
The key lies in recognizing the persistence and intensity of this itchiness. While skin conditions or allergies might cause similar symptoms, when this itchiness is combined with other signs from this list, a medical consultation becomes paramount. Listening to your body and understanding these signals can be the first defense against progression. (5)
