Symptom 10: Sensitivity to Smells
During a migraine attack, sensitivity to smells, also known as osmophobia, can become heightened. This increased sensitivity can make certain odors unbearable and even trigger or worsen a migraine episode.
The exact cause of osmophobia during a migraine is not well understood, but it may be related to the brain’s heightened response to sensory stimuli and changes in the processing of smell-related information.
To cope with sensitivity to smells during a migraine, try to identify and avoid potential odor triggers. Use unscented personal care products, and consider using air purifiers or odor-neutralizing products in your home. Communicate your needs to those around you, and ask for their understanding and support in creating an odor-free environment when possible. (10)
