Edema or swelling is the body’s visual distress signal. When the face or neck starts to exhibit noticeable swelling without any apparent cause, it’s the body’s way of sounding an alarm. This type of swelling isn’t akin to the puffiness one wakes up with after a night of salty snacks. It’s more pronounced, persistent, and often accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

The lungs, in their intricate design, are closely connected to the heart and major vessels. A tumor growing in the upper part of the lung, known as a Pancoast tumor, can exert pressure on the superior vena cava. This is the large vein that directs blood from the upper body into the heart. Once this vein is compressed, blood flow is impeded, leading to a buildup of fluid and resultant swelling in the face and neck.

But it’s not just fluid accumulation. The pressure exerted by the tumor can affect surrounding nerve endings. Patients might experience pain or tingling sensations along with the swelling. The skin might take on a bluish-red tinge due to the trapped blood and reduced oxygen supply. (9)
