Sign 2: Anemia and Fatigue
When you think of anemia, you likely picture pale skin and tired eyes. But in the context of multiple myeloma, it’s much more than just “feeling a bit tired.” The fatigue stemming from myeloma-induced anemia is profound, unrelenting, and isn’t alleviated by rest.
The fault lies with the invading myeloma cells. As they occupy more space within the bone marrow, the production of red blood cells is compromised. These cells, vital for transporting oxygen throughout the body, decrease in number, leading to anemia.
So, how does this affect day-to-day life? Simple tasks become herculean. Walking up a flight of stairs or even just getting out of bed can feel exhausting. This fatigue is accompanied by weakness and, in severe cases, shortness of breath even without exertion.
Mentally, it’s no easier. Concentration dips, and there’s a persistent feeling of being in a fog. It’s not just physical tiredness; it’s mental and emotional exhaustion. Recognizing these symptoms early can aid in swift intervention, mitigating complications and enhancing the overall quality of life. (2)
