Top 10 Symptoms of Thyroid Problems.
1. Body Weight Changes.
The thyroid gland is responsible for metabolism in the body. The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is determined by measuring the amount of oxygen used by the body at rest over a specific period of time. It is often relied on to access one’s thyroid status: the more active the thyroid is, the higher the BMR will be. Differences in BMR interfere with energy balance. That is, the difference between the number of calories received with food and the number of calories burned. Thus, unexplained weight changes can sometimes – but not necessarily – indicate thyroid problems. In hypothyroidism it is possible to gain weight without an obvious reason and not be able to lose it through exercise and cutting back on calories.
On the contrary, in hyperthyroidism, it is possible to lose weight without intending to. Sometimes, it is even possible to stay underweight even when eating more.
The above symptoms will not be true for everyone, because there are lots of other factors controlling energy expenditure, food intake, and body weight. You can find yourself losing weight with an underactive thyroid, or you may have an overactive thyroid and still be overweight. [5, 6]
