3. Fatigue and Sleep Issues.
Sleep issues and fatigue are common conditions that come with thyroid disorders. In hypothyroidism, fatigue is more than feeling tired after a bad night’s sleep or too much stress. It is extreme exhaustion that interferes with daily life. Here are signs to look out for:
- Waking up exhausted despite getting enough hours of sleep;
- Finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning due to lack of energy;
- Taking long naps during the day and still feeling exhausted. [8]
The function of the thyroid is also closely connected to the function of the adrenal gland, which is responsible for the release of cortisol (known as the stress hormone). Since thyroid malfunction puts continuous stress on the body, the adrenals may respond by releasing more cortisol than needed. This is commonly seen in an overactive thyroid, but can happen in both types. In this case, the symptoms will most likely be:
- Difficulty falling asleep;
- Waking up several times during the night;
- Having to urinate several times during the night;
- Feeling anxious at bedtime. [5, 9]
