10 Signs You Might Have a Thyroid Problem

7. Changes in Bowel Habits.

Thyroid disorders can cause digestion issues.

In hypothyroidism, GI tract movement slows down, which may result in persistent constipation that is not responsive to treatment. In severe cases, there is a possibility of developing irritable bowel syndrome and even intestinal obstruction.

In hyperthyroidism, on the contrary, there is a chance of suffering from very frequent bowel movements or diarrhea, associated with an increased content of undigested fat in the stools. Both symptoms usually go away once treatment for the overactive thyroid is started. The function of the muscles of the esophagus can also be affected. In this case, it’s possible to have abdominal pain and difficulty swallowing. An excess of thyroid hormones can alter the way the stomach is emptied after a meal or decrease the production of acid in the stomach, causing digestion disorders. [10, 11]
