Shortness of breath
Shortness of breath is a tight uncomfortable feeling in the chest that doesn’t let us take a deep breath. This may occur while walking, climbing stairs, running or even when sitting still. It can come on suddenly or slowly over weeks to months.
It is possible to prevent and relieve shortness of breath on your own. Smoking can worsen this symptom or cause complications for any underlying lung disease, so it is important to quit and to avoid secondhand smoke. Similarly, avoiding exposure to pollutants or any known allergy triggers can reduce this unpleasant sensation. Other helpful steps to preventing or relieving shortness of breath may include practicing breathing and/or relaxation techniques; reaching and maintaining a healthy weight; avoiding activity in times when temperatures are very hot or very cold, or when the humidity is high.
