10 Symptoms and Signs of Bronchitis

Wheezing

Wheezing is the sound that can be heard when the airway is partially blocked by mucus. Some wheezes can only be heard with a stethoscope, but sometimes they are loud enough for the human ear. Wheezing is more obvious when exhaling, but can also be heard when breathing in. The tone of the wheeze can vary depending on which part of the respiratory system is blocked or narrowed. Narrowing in the upper respiratory system may make for a wheeze that sounds more hoarse. Lower obstructions may have a more musical tone. Anyone – from infants to elderly adults – can develop wheezing.

There is no specific treatment for wheezing. A bronchodilator such as albuterol or an antibiotic may be prescribed, and gradually the quantity of mucus will decrease. This should help to breathe better as you recover.

However, there are a few home remedies that can help improve wheezing:

  • Drink hot herbal tea. The warmth and moisture of the tea will help relax the bronchial tubes. Some studies show green tea to have antibacterial properties as well.
  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter to eliminate potential allergens in your home. You can also vaporize your air with a humidifier.
