5. Memory Loss
Though not as common as painted in popular culture, it is still quite possible to experience memory loss or amnesia after a concussion. In most cases it is temporary, but if the trauma was severe and left untreated it may become permanent.
Temporary amnesia occurs when the brain needs to focus on healing, and therefore it simply withdraws from some of its executive functions, like recalling memories. It is common to not remember anything around the time of the injury.
Even though permanent memory loss is a rare occasion and only occurs after a very serious head trauma, it’s important not to hesitate to seek medical attention if you notice any signs of memory loss. [3]
