10 Symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome

7. An alteration in communication

That is, peculiarities in verbal and non-verbal communication.

The person is unable to decode the tone of voice, humor, double meanings, puns, understanding of abstract concepts, irony, figurative meaning, metaphors, facial expressions, subtleties of language, or the meaning of gestures. They will take everything said at face value or ask to explain some of the expressions they hear.

Also, the tone of voice of the person can be monotonous and emotionless, like a recitation of a text learned by heart.

8. Differences in social interactions

For a person with Asperger’s it is difficult to imagine the emotional state of another person, and impossible to guess it. They will only rely on their own emotions. They may then appear to be insensitive, even if they don’t intend to be, or appear to behave ‘strangely’, or in a way thought to be socially inappropriate.

Often they simply do not know how to express their emotions in a socially acceptable manner.
