A throbbing headache can be both distracting and debilitating. For some battling Chikungunya, headaches become a constant companion. Described by many as a pressing sensation, almost as if there’s a weight pushing down, these headaches can range from mild to severe.

The origins of these headaches are multi-faceted. Elevated body temperatures, dehydration due to vomiting, or the body’s general stress from fighting the virus all contribute. There’s also the theory that the virus may cause inflammation in regions around the brain.

Unlike the common headaches many of us experience, which can be pinpointed to specific regions, Chikungunya headaches are often generalized. The entire head feels heavy and painful. Adding to the discomfort, these headaches are persistent, hanging around for most of the disease’s duration.

One unique aspect of these headaches is their timing. They often peak in the evenings, just as the body’s energy levels are dipping. However, as the days go by and the body starts to heal, these headaches become less frequent and less intense, offering much-needed respite. (7)
