Another telltale sign of constipation is the consistency of the stool. When stool appears hard or has a lumpy texture, it’s not merely an observation; it’s a symptom. Stool consistency is directly influenced by our diet, hydration levels, and the speed at which food moves through the digestive tract.

When stool remains in the large intestine for an extended period, the colon absorbs more water from it. This leads to harder, dryer stools which are more difficult to pass. The physical act of passing hard stools can be both uncomfortable and, in some cases, painful. Over time, this can result in further complications such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures.

Diet plays a starring role here. A diet rich in processed foods but low in fiber can lead to harder stools. Hydration, or the lack of it, is another key factor. Adequate water intake ensures that stools retain moisture, making them softer and easier to pass.(2)
