Symptom 10: Sore Throat
Waking up with a sore throat can often be dismissed as the onset of a cold or maybe the result of sleeping with the mouth open. But for those with EMD, a persistent sore throat can be a direct consequence of their condition. It’s not about infection or dryness, but rather the constant challenges posed to the throat due to esophageal dysfunction.
Whether it’s the frequent need to clear the throat, regurgitation effects, or even the mere act of swallowing being impaired, the throat is continually under duress. Over time, this can lead to inflammation, resulting in a persistent soreness.
The soreness can impact various facets of life. Simple pleasures like enjoying a hot beverage or indulging in spicy food can become sources of discomfort. Speaking for prolonged periods might become painful, and the constant soreness can be mentally draining.(10)
