Burping, while natural, can sometimes take center stage more than we’d like. Kids, unaware of the nuances of polite society, might even find humor in it. But when burping is consistent and excessive, it’s more than just a source of giggles. It’s a body trying to communicate.

Every time we eat or drink, we swallow a bit of air. This trapped air builds up in the stomach and needs an exit. The body, efficient as ever, expels this air via a burp. However, frequent and excessive burping might suggest that too much air is being swallowed or there’s some disturbance in the digestive process.

Preventive measures can reduce excessive burping. Encouraging kids to eat slowly and chew properly can be a start. For the younger ones, ensuring they’re latched correctly while breastfeeding or checking the bottle’s nipple size can make a difference.

While burping loudly might be frowned upon at the dining table, from a health perspective, the volume isn’t as concerning as the frequency. Constant burping, especially if it’s accompanied by other symptoms, hints at an underlying issue.(6)
