10 Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency

2. A swollen neck

This is the most evident sign of iodine deficiency. The goiter is caused by the enlargement of the thyroid and appears at the base and in the front of the neck.

The thyroid gland is small, butterfly-shaped, and located at the front of the neck. It creates thyroid hormones when it receives a signal from the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Without enough iodine, our thyroid gland expands in an effort to take in more iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones. Since the gland is located in the neck, this can cause swelling in the area and lead to a goiter.
