10 Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency

9. Heavy and irregular menstruation

When thyroid hormone levels are low in an underactive thyroid due to a lack of iodine, menstrual disturbances happen; menstruation becomes unusally heavy, or there might be a decrease in volume and duration, or sometimes even an absence of menstruation. In some cases even an absence of ovulation. Without ovulation, the endometrium releases and causes excessive bleeding. These disorders may prevent the embryo from implanting in the uterus, and therefore decrease the chances of having a successful conception.

In severe cases, the lack of thyroid hormones in the female body can lead to a decrease in fertility as well as other problems, such as emotional disturbances, a decrease in immunity and libido.
