Symptom 2: Misuse of Laxatives or Diuretics
Venturing further into the realm of purging disorder, we come across another significant sign: the misuse of laxatives or diuretics. For those unfamiliar, these substances expedite the removal of food and liquids from the body. They are typically prescribed for medical reasons such as constipation or fluid retention.
However, within the context of purging disorder, individuals may use these substances excessively, and without medical need, to control their weight. The underlying rationale is often rooted in the belief that by expediting the removal of food, they can prevent caloric absorption and thus, weight gain.
But the misuse of laxatives and diuretics carries severe health risks. Over time, the body can become dependent on them, rendering natural bowel movements infrequent or even impossible without intervention. Additionally, the rapid loss of fluids can lead to dehydration, affecting vital organs like the kidneys. (2)
