Symptom 3: Frequent Infections
The immune system is our body’s primary defense mechanism against foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. ATL, affecting the T-cells integral to this defense system, can compromise its efficacy. The outcome? An increased susceptibility to infections.
Common infections, like the flu or colds, might occur with increased frequency. What’s more concerning is the severity and duration of these infections. For an ATL patient, a simple cold might last longer and hit harder than it would for someone with a fully functional immune system.
Beyond these common ailments, there’s also an increased risk of more severe infections. Conditions like pneumonia, which can be life-threatening even in otherwise healthy individuals, become a significant concern. The body’s decreased ability to fight off the invading pathogens means that these severe conditions can set in faster and with more devastating effects.
In addition to respiratory infections, fungal infections, especially those affecting the skin and nails, can become commonplace. These infections, often stubborn and recurrent, can add to the patient’s discomfort and distress. (3)
