Symptom 10: Irritation in the Eyes
Cold sores, as the name suggests, primarily affect the oral region. However, in some instances, the virus can cause ocular complications. The eyes becoming red, swollen, and irritable might seem unrelated to a lip blister, but the connection lies deep within the virulence of herpes simplex.
The herpes simplex virus, in rare cases, can cause an eye condition known as herpes simplex keratitis. This condition affects the cornea, leading to eye redness, blurred vision, and even a gritty feeling in the eyes, much like there’s a foreign body present.
If left unchecked, herpes simplex keratitis can lead to deeper eye issues. Corneal scarring can impact vision, and in severe cases, might even lead to vision loss. It emphasizes the importance of early detection and intervention, ensuring that what starts as a mere irritation doesn’t escalate into something far more concerning.
Given the potential severity of eye complications, it’s crucial to consult an ophthalmologist if one suspects a connection between their cold sores and eye discomfort. Antiviral eye drops or ointments might be prescribed, helping curb the virus’s spread and offering symptomatic relief.
Like all symptoms of cold sores, eye irritation doesn’t solely impact physical health. Blurred vision or the constant sensation of something in the eye can be mentally distressing. It serves as a constant reminder of the virus’s pervasive impact, urging one to seek both medical intervention and emotional support. (10)
