6. A Mouthful of Troubles: Oral Lesions and Discomfort
Stepping away from the extremities and skin, erythema multiforme also has a penchant for leaving its mark inside the mouth. The oral cavity, with its delicate mucosa, often becomes a battleground for this condition. Sores and lesions begin to form, and they don’t just stand still; they cause pain and significant discomfort.
Interestingly, these oral lesions might be the only visible sign of the condition for some individuals. The insides of the cheeks, the tongue, and the lips can develop painful ulcers. The manifestation of these sores varies; some may be filled with fluid, while others can appear as raw, red patches.
Eating and drinking become more than just daily activities—they morph into challenges. Spicy, hot, or acidic foods can be particularly agonizing. But beyond the physical pain lies another layer. The social aspect of eating, the joy of tasting, and the act of speaking, all get tainted.(6)
