Symptom 6: Frequent Infections in the Affected Area
When discussing Milroy’s Disease, one cannot overlook the heightened susceptibility to infections in areas affected by lymphedema. It’s a direct consequence of the malfunctioning lymphatic system and the constant accumulation of lymph fluid.
The lymphatic system plays a pivotal role in our body’s defense mechanism. The fluid, lymph, carries white blood cells essential for fighting infections. With a compromised system, MD patients experience a weakened immune response in the swollen regions. This makes the skin in these areas an easy target for bacterial and fungal invasions.
Beyond just the reduced immune response, the physical swelling and skin changes offer a conducive environment for infections. The stretched and thickened skin can develop tiny cracks, making it easier for pathogens to enter. Combine this with the warm and moist environment caused by swelling, and it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. (6)
