7. Skin Rashes: The External Manifestation of Ulcerative Colitis
Skin rashes are another symptom of ulcerative colitis that can be concerning for men. Up to 15% of individuals with inflammatory bowel disease may develop skin rashes or other dermatological manifestations. These rashes can vary in appearance and severity, but the most common types include erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum.
Erythema nodosum is characterized by tender, red nodules that typically appear on the lower legs. Pyoderma gangrenosum, on the other hand, is a more severe and rare condition characterized by painful ulcers that can occur anywhere on the body. Both conditions are believed to be related to the same inflammatory processes that cause ulcerative colitis.
Treatment for skin rashes in men with ulcerative colitis typically involves addressing the underlying inflammation. This may include corticosteroids, immunosuppressive medications, or biologic therapies.
