Fact 2: Common Causes in Children
Diarrhea in children isn’t a disease in itself but a symptom. Multiple factors can trigger this response in the body. Infections are the most common culprits. Children’s immune systems are still developing, making them more susceptible to various pathogens.
Viral infections like rotavirus or norovirus can quickly lead to an outbreak of diarrhea, especially in places like daycare or schools. Bacterial infections from organisms such as E. coli or salmonella, often transmitted through contaminated food or water, are other frequent agents. These bacterial infections can sometimes be more severe than their viral counterparts.
Then there’s the category of parasites, with Giardia being a well-known member. Parasitic infections can result from consuming contaminated water, and they tend to persist longer than bacterial or viral causes. Another cause to consider is food intolerances or allergies. For instance, lactose intolerance can cause diarrhea if the child consumes dairy products. (2)
