Fact 4: Over-the-counter Treatments
There’s a plethora of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments available for diarrhea. However, not all are suitable for children, and it’s essential to be cautious. The primary aim of these treatments is to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications like dehydration.
Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are among the most recommended treatments. These solutions contain the right mix of salts and sugars to replenish lost fluids and essential electrolytes. They’re available in various flavors, making them more palatable for children.
Some parents might consider giving anti-diarrheal medications available OTC. However, these aren’t always recommended for children. They can have side effects and might not be safe for all age groups. Probiotics, often termed as ‘friendly bacteria,’ can help restore the gut’s natural balance. They can be especially beneficial if the diarrhea is due to antibiotic usage. (4)
