Sign 6: Frequent Infections
Our body’s immune system functions as a vigilant guard, identifying and fending off external invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. But what happens when this guard is preoccupied or weakened? In the context of Hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma (HSTCL), frequent infections become a recurring problem, painting a tale of an immune system that’s under siege.
At the very crux of our immune system are white blood cells, which play a pivotal role in recognizing and combating infectious agents. HSTCL directly targets these defenders, particularly the T-cells. When the T-cells become compromised, it’s akin to removing sentries from a fortress wall; the defenses aren’t as strong or reactive as they should be. But the challenges don’t end there. The treatments commonly administered for HSTCL, especially chemotherapy, can inadvertently weaken the immune system further. It’s a bit of an unfortunate paradox: a therapeutic procedure aimed at tackling the disease also makes the body more vulnerable to other invaders.
In the wake of this compromised immunity, patients often grapple with a multitude of infections. While the occasional cold or flu can be expected in any individual, for someone battling HSTCL, these become alarmingly regular. The spectrum isn’t limited to just respiratory issues. Skin infections, oral thrush, gastrointestinal problems, and even graver infections like pneumonia may manifest. The severity can range from mild and manageable to debilitating, requiring hospitalization.(6)
