Sign 8: Shortness of Breath
In the calm rhythm of daily life, breathing is often an unconscious act. However, for some grappling with HSTCL, each breath can become an arduous task. Shortness of breath, or dyspnea, can creep in, making even mundane tasks feel mountainous.
While it’s natural to feel out of breath after strenuous activities, those with HSTCL may experience it even at rest or during minimal exertion. This isn’t typical breathlessness; it’s a sensation of not getting enough air, often accompanied by a tightness in the chest.
Several factors can contribute to this symptom. The enlargement of spleen or liver might press against the diaphragm, impeding lung expansion. Moreover, HSTCL can affect the mediastinum, the space between the lungs, leading to respiratory discomfort.
Regular lung function tests can provide insights into breathing efficiency. Coupled with imaging studies, they can pinpoint the cause of dyspnea. Moreover, being attuned to one’s breathing patterns and recognizing sudden changes is essential. (8)
