Symptom 8. Eye Pain or Discomfort
Eye pain or discomfort can be a symptom of diabetic retinopathy. This can manifest as a sensation of pressure, throbbing, or aching within or around the eye. While mild discomfort may not be a cause for concern, persistent or severe eye pain should be evaluated by an eye care professional.
Diabetic retinopathy damages the blood vessels within the retina due to high blood sugar levels. This damage can lead to the formation of abnormal blood vessels, which are prone to leaking fluid and blood into the eye. The buildup of fluid or blood in the eye can cause pressure and discomfort. Additionally, nerve damage from diabetes can also contribute to eye pain or discomfort.
If you experience eye pain or discomfort, monitor the frequency, severity, and duration of the symptom. Take note of any additional symptoms, such as changes in vision, redness, or swelling, which could indicate a more serious issue. If you have persistent or worsening eye pain, consult an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye exam. They can determine if diabetic retinopathy is causing the issue and recommend appropriate treatment options to address the problem and protect your vision.
