Double vision, or diplopia, occurs when an individual perceives two images of a single object either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. This can be a symptom of diabetic retinopathy, making it challenging to focus and carry out daily activities, such as reading or driving.
High blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can damage the nerves responsible for controlling eye movement, leading to double vision. In diabetic retinopathy, the damage to blood vessels within the retina can also cause swelling and fluid accumulation, which may interfere with the eye’s ability to focus properly. These factors can contribute to the development of double vision in individuals with diabetic retinopathy.
