Disease 12. Shingles (Herpes Zoster): A Painful Encore
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. Shingles typically affects older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The rash usually appears on one side of the body or face and is accompanied by burning, tingling, or itching sensations. In some cases, shingles can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, a condition that causes persistent nerve pain long after the rash has resolved.
Treatment for shingles includes antiviral medications, which can help shorten the duration of the outbreak and reduce the risk of complications. Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications may also be prescribed to manage pain and inflammation. A shingles vaccine is available to help prevent the condition or reduce its severity in individuals who do develop it. (12)
