Disease 8. Seborrheic Dermatitis: The Flaky Foe
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition that affects areas of the body with a high concentration of oil-producing glands, such as the scalp, face, and upper chest. Symptoms include redness, itching, and flaking or scaling of the skin.
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an overgrowth of the yeast Malassezia on the skin, along with an abnormal immune response. Seborrheic dermatitis is more common in individuals with certain medical conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or HIV.
Treatment for seborrheic dermatitis typically involves the use of medicated shampoos, creams, or lotions containing ingredients like selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or ketoconazole. In more severe cases, a healthcare provider may prescribe topical corticosteroids or antifungal medications. Maintaining a regular skincare routine and avoiding harsh hair or skincare products can help manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups. (8)
