Itchiness is another symptom often experienced by those with dry eye syndrome. When the eye’s surface is inadequately lubricated, it can become irritated, leading to an itchy sensation. This itchiness can be further exacerbated by factors such as allergens, environmental irritants, or rubbing the eyes.
To address itchiness related to dry eye syndrome, it’s essential to restore proper lubrication and balance to the eye’s surface. Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can help replenish moisture and alleviate itchiness. In some cases, antihistamine eye drops or oral medications may be recommended to manage allergy-related itchiness.
Additionally, avoiding known irritants, maintaining proper eye hygiene, and using a humidifier to add moisture to the air can all help reduce itchiness associated with dry eye syndrome. (6)
