Symptom 3: Rectal Bleeding
Another telltale sign of UC is rectal bleeding, which occurs when the inflamed colon tissue bleeds during bowel movements. The presence of blood in the stool can range from small traces to more significant amounts, and it may appear bright red, dark red, or even black.
Rectal bleeding can lead to anemia, a condition characterized by a decreased number of red blood cells or a lower than normal hemoglobin level. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and pale skin. It’s crucial to report any rectal bleeding to your healthcare provider, as they can determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
In some cases, rectal bleeding may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as tenesmus (a persistent urge to have a bowel movement even when the rectum is empty) and pain during bowel movements. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and may require medical intervention to manage and alleviate discomfort. (3)
