Symptom 9: Eye Inflammation
Eye inflammation, or uveitis, is a rare but potentially serious complication of UC. This occurs when the immune system’s response to inflammation in the colon also affects the uvea, a layer of tissue within the eye. Uveitis can cause symptoms such as redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision.
If left untreated, uveitis can lead to more severe complications, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and even vision loss. Therefore, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly if you experience any symptoms of eye inflammation.
Treatment for uveitis typically involves the use of corticosteroid eye drops, oral corticosteroids, or other immunosuppressive medications to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms. In some cases, your healthcare provider may also recommend additional treatments, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, or antiviral medications, depending on the underlying cause of the inflammation.
