Fact 8: Blood Screening Importance
Blood, the lifeline of our body, can also be a vehicle for the transmission of Chagas disease. Hence, the significance of blood screening, especially in endemic regions, can’t be overemphasized.
While the primary transmission mode for Chagas is the triatomine bug, blood transfusions from infected donors present a clear and present danger. The insidious nature of Chagas, where symptoms might be absent or mild, means that many infected individuals might not even realize they carry the parasite.
This realization has led many countries, especially those in Latin America, to implement stringent blood screening protocols. Donors are tested for the presence of the T. cruzi parasite, ensuring the blood supply remains uncontaminated.. (8)
